If you're looking for the rationale for war, you're looking in the wrong direction. War is almost always about the domestic audience, rather the external one.

A war is distraction for a bad domestic situation, a way of seeming strong for a shaky government, it's a way of redistributing wealth from the public to the private via government expenditure on arms contracts.

If it was all about politics, then a single bullet could settle the argument between leaders.
