We have a Christmas Eve tradition of reading the poem from a book my mother has; it has pictures, and when I next get to see it, I'll have a look at how the illustrator solved those issues. I vaguely remember there's a picture showing the narrator (in his cap) running down the stair from his bedroom to see what's happening.
