Voting for Obama, tomorrow...
Feb. 11th, 2008 07:18 pm...Finally checked out his website, and saw, among his list of issues, that he specifically included Disability Rights (including proposing a UN Resolution for Disability rights around the world). That prompted me to donate $25.
Also, there was an email form for you to fill out, and suggest your own ideas for the platform... So I gave my suggestion.
...I forget the exact words I used, but I said that I was a woman in her forties with a college education, but I still cannot get and keep meaningful employment because I don't have affordable, reliable access to transportation. I went on to say that my city does provide wheelchair accessible buses, but I cannot use them, because there are no sidewalks I can use to get to the bus stop.
I suggested, therefore, that support pedestrian infrastructure be included in transportation monies sent to the states, along with money for highways and bridges. I pointed out that this would also help the elderly, and would help the poor (who often cannot afford cars) to get off welfare.
And I also pointed out that this would help our energy goals of lessening our dependence on foreign oil.
I don't expect a reply. But maybe I've put a bug in someone's ear (that is the right saying, isn't it?). I mean fuel cells and magnetic trains, and biofuels are all very shiny. But there's also a partial solution out there that's low-tech and simple -- sidewalks have been around since the Ancient Romans, and we don't need to spend decades figuring out how they work...
