My favorite music forum (which is where my other main cluster of friends, besides the Doctor Who group), has been down for the last day and a half days, probably due to the snow in the northeast USA... The thing originates out of two servers in two computers on a certian Max's dining room table.... and that table is somewhere in Connecticut, I believe... And I was fancying a chat with these folks right now...

Bossmonster, the source of animated online games for the purpose of wiling away time, has also been down, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were for similiar reasons...

So even though I'm hundreds of miles south of the snow, it has still forced me to think in terms hibernation ... thank Goddess (and certain special humans) for the pile of new books I got ;-)

They even showed the big northeastern USA snowfalls on the news over here, showed snowploughs pushing through three feet of snow somewhere. All we've had is drizzly rain. Only internet probs I've had is Freeserve's news server being a wee bit flaky.

Ended up spending the day reading books as well, just finished The Amazing Maurice, great stuff! :)

I'll get to that later... just started "Hogfather", personally... I may sort out what's happening eventually... ;-).

The book my Dad got me is one of those really heavy volumes, because it uses the really good, heavy paper -- the kind that feels good between your fingers. It's an annotated anthology of 25 classic fairytales, with new translations from the original languages (as opposed to being translations of translations of stories collected by muses-know-who) with notes on all the different versions of the tales, and tips on how to start discussions about the stories, and full color, 19th century illustrations.

I love this sort of thing, generally, this will, I think, come in very handy if I ever try to start up that storytelling workshop idea again... but right now, I'm just in the mood for a ripping good tale to whiz me away, ya know?

I did almost change my mind about sending Hogfather, as it can be a bit confusing to a new Discworld reader but decided to go ahead anyways as the first Discworld book I read wasn't the first and I just picked things up as I went along. :)

(For the record, my first was Mort, the fourth book and it seems to be one that gets recommended a lot as the best to start off with.)

The annotated fairy-tale book sounds wonderful. The local library years ago had a similar kind of book, but I was a bit too young to appreciate all the footnotes and stuff back then. :)
