Gryphon's talons were made into drinking horns, because it was believed that they could detect poison in the drink...
Now, think about that a minute: A gryphon's front half had the shape and proportions of an eagle.
If one talon were big enough to use as a drinking horn ... How big was the rest of the beast?
Tip: if you ever meet a gryphon, try not to look like a snack!
