And I chose to register in the Liberal Party... just to help keep it as a choice on the ballot. It's not like it was a very popular choice, back then -- I was one of a grand total of three (3) registered Liberals in the county (smallest county in the state, true, but still).
That was 22 years ago. I thought things were bad for us Liberals back then... I never the word would be used as an insult that Democrats would use against each other...
And just this evening, on a repeat of Charlie Rose, the host was asking how Kerry could "overcome" the label of "liberal."
Well, I want to fight back!
I want a t-shirt printed with a dictionary definition of "liberal" (in my own paraphrase, so I won't have to print the whole thing in 6 pt., or get sued for copyright infringement):
Something like this:
liberal (lîb´er-el, lîb´rel) adjective
Abbr. lib.
1. Not bound by dogma or tradition -- open minded and tolerant. 2. generous. 3. Not rigidly literal. 4. the intellectual disciplines of the humanities. Noun: Liberal: A member of the Liberal party.
(From the Latin liber: Free)
So, whatcha think?
