Item, the First: I am less than 3,000 words from finishing ... or maybe a little bit more, considering that NaNo's word counter is just a bit stingier than OpenOffice's. OpenOffice tells me that I have written 47,135 words, and NaNo's counter insists that I have written 47,034 words. A 101 difference out of 50,000 is probably negligiable, but still, it's just the teensiest bit disheartening to be told that you haven't written as much as you thought you had.

Item the Second: **OOPSIE!** I'm running out of words before I've run out of story!* When I started, I envisioned the bulk of the story being set mostly in The WorkShop, where we'd witness the gradual transformation of the protagonist from Teh Eval Stepbrother (I even patterened him after the evil stepsisters in Cinderella) to a generous and noble person (even if still remains someone who is deathly allergic to the sweet and sentimental). And that transformation would come through the hands-on work in The WorkShop. And the main action of the story, the conflict and adventure, would all take place in that paralell dimension. But I'm at Word #47,034 and he hasn't even set foot on the factory floor, yet. I think I may bave to change my definition of "The End," and have my protagonist transform from someone who doesn't believe in Santa Claus to someone resigned to working in Santa's Shop. I'll just make believe it's the first book of a trilogy, or something. Then, I'll do some major cutting in the rewrite, and cut the "3" books down to "1". I know, right now, that the first 10,000 words can be cut entirely -- as a matter of fact, I knew it as soon as I had written them.

Item the Third: The idea of a dark, frightening "Santa" may be an idea whose time has come (again). Here, Guv, I present my evidence (archived, from two years ago) -- I did warn you that it was dark).

"Oh, but that's only a sign of how cynical and miserly our modern culture has become," you say? Well, take a look at this woodcut, from Germany, in 1784 Behind a cut, for size )
In that sack of his, that charming fellow is carrying a tiny Saint Nicholas, and a great big Christmas Tree, btw.

Item, the Fourth I'll go and finish my novel, now, shall I?

Toodles!

*Yes, I know I could stop in the middle, and no one would know the difference, but the point of NaNo is to write a complete, 50K, novel in a month, not half of a 100K novel.
