  • Why, in English, do we make a distinction (subtle, I admit) between "Long" and "Tall," but we only have one word for "short"?

  • Why are so many food things packed in groups of six, (six packs of beer/soda, six granola bars to a box, etc.), when there are seven days to the week?

  • Why is salt always paired with black pepper, and not some other spice?

  • Who figured out what the "Alphabetical Order" is, and when?

  • Why do I have a feeling that there should be five questions in this list, instead of four?

[livejournal.com profile] indefatigable42 and I were talking about children's songs in #kazooband, yesterday. And she was trying to remember a song about Nellie Bly (no, not the one by Stephen Foster) -- the pen name of Elizabeth Cochrane. One of my favorite all-time uppity women, she became an undercover journalist in 1885, at the age of 18, because she got pissed off at a man who wrote an article saying girls were only fit for cooking and cleaning.

As a kid, she was nicknamed "Pinky" because she insisted on wearing bright colors, instead of proper and sensible beige and grey, so I had to make that caption that color.

Here's a brief bio of her, and the source for my icon pic.
