Awww... this makes me think of one sweet dog we had, a black lab mix named Gypsy Davey... Now, at the time, we lived in nearly the middle of nowhere (nearest neighbor 1/4 mile away, our driveway a narrow one-lane track pinned between rows of densely growing trees that was 1/5 mile long), and this little black puppy barely old enough to be weaned (maybe a couple of months old) was sitting in the doghouse by our front door just as if he had always lived there.
At the time, we were in the midst of a gypsy moth population boom (couldn't move, practically, without getting cattipillar silk in your hair), and Mother had to sweep a carpet of cattapillar webs off the dog house to see the puppy inside... So we named him Gypsy Davey, after the old ballad:
It was late one night, when the lord came home,
Asking about his Lady, O!
The only answer that he got, was:
"She's gone with the Gypsy Davey-O!"
We never did figure out how he got there (we already had two dogs, and neither of them made any sort of fuss -- which they normally would have done, if some human had come walking or driving up to leave the puppy on our doorstep). But Davey just belonged with us, you know?
Sweetest little thing you'd ever seen.... Sadly, he died young and suddenly from canine luekemia... our older dog, Trevor downright wept that morning... and we all moped for months...
