Word count goal for 24th June: 16,008. Word count acchieved: 16025.

Yay!!

Funny (as in strange) thing, tech-wise:
  • I'm writing this screenplay with a preformatted template for Open Office, full of macros.

  • For wordcount validation, this go 'round, instead of uploading a .txt file, as in NaNo, we're asked to copy and paste our whole text into a text window -- it can hold about a 1,000,000 words (which is 50 -?- whole scripts).

  • When I copy and paste my text with macros enabled, Skrenzy's official word counter counts fewer words than Open Office's counter (on the order of a fraction of one percent). But when I open the document with the macros disabled, Skrenzy's official counter counts more words than Open Office. Not complaining, mind, but: Buh-wha? I find this totally counterintuitive.

You know what I wish word processors came with? A word count timer -- like an egg timer is for minutes, this would be for words. You put a preset number of words as your goal (like, say: 667, for Skrenzy, or 1,667, for NaNo), and the computer would ding at you when you've typed your goal number. I waste more time, as I near my goal, pausing to check my word count, it's not even slightly amusing. The last 250 words were worse than pulling teeth:
Type, type, typity, type. (check word count). 200 words to go.
Type, typity, type, tap, type. (check word count). 180 words to go.
Typeity, type, type, type. (check word count). 165 words to go?!?!
You've got to be kidding me!!!

A word count dinger would free me up from that habit (especially if it were designed so reset/stop counting if I checked my word count manually).

Just sayin'.

Especially since many professional writers have to stay within an exact number of words (newspaper writers, for example)/

It'd be for more than silly online people, you know. And totally doable.

A new proverb, for the 21st Century:

A watched wordcount never climbs.
