The Globe and Mail's report on the story said that, while the Israeli army reported that mortar shells were fired from within the school, two residents of the area said that they were fired from a street near the school. I find that version of the story much more plausible.

Yeah, that's more plausible.

What I heard, on NPR's All Things Considered, is that the U.N. officials were condemning the bombing, and calling for Israeli officials to conduct an internal review of the incident.

And the Israeli army officials said that they had to fire on the school, because that was the source of two rocket attacks, and that two Hamas militants were among the 30 dead.

I think, perhaps, the army people thought the rockets came from inside the school, and were just mistaken. But that's almost as disturbing as deliberately bombing civilians just because they're the "enemy," since that would mean they have absolutely zero faith in the U.N., if they think the U.N. folks would let militants with rocket launchers into a bomb shelter.
