Date: 2011-07-05 07:58 pm (UTC)4. I know of the word, yes (that it exists). But it's not one that I've ever felt at home with enough to incorporate it into my personal lexicon.
Thinking about this finding, though, it kind of makes sense, if you trace back far enough into our mammalian heritage:
You're a wee, fuzzy creature in the dark, and you're startled awake by a sound. If you can smell the sound-maker, as well, it might help you decipher if it's one creature with four feet, or two with two feet, and also whether it's safe to go back to sleep or time to run...
Also, both smells and sounds bring back instant memories, and can change moods like a switch.
