The painters are here to banish the beige ...

The house is being painted, today and tomorrow (mostly "Pueblo Red" [aka: reddish brown] and "Almond Cream" [pale yellow]),* so at some point, when they get back to this office, my computer and phone will be unplugged. So if you wonder where I am, that's where...

*With "Soft rabbit brown" for my bedroom and a Navy blue for Audrey's.

Thanks! I think it will be... they're doing my room/bathroom first, so I can have that space while they do the rest of the house, and right now, they have the door to my room closed, so I can't see what they're doing, yet.

Thank you... I think it will be. The red-brown color will be in the large central room/s, with the pale yellow in the hallways on either side, so as you look from one side of the house to the other (it's mostly an open floor plan), you'll nearly always see the two colors together (with the soft rabbit brown at the end, if I leave my bedroom door open).

Lovely! We have a very similar colour scheme - a pale buttery yellow on most walls, with a brick-y terracotta-y red on feature walls. I think you'll love it.

Oh, we do! Two of the painters volunteered to come back yesterday, to finish up and put the second coat of paint on the walls in the central room/s, and even he was commenting on our great choice of colors: "If I ever get time and money to paint my own house, I think I'll choose colors like these." (paraphrased).

Photos will be coming, when the furniture is moved back to its proper place.

Lovely.

We're a loooong way from a kitchen or bathroom remodel, but I enjoy contemplating possible colour schemes for those. Right now I'm thinking about the bathroom: basic white fixtures with glass mosaic tile border accents in citrus colours (tangerine, lime, sunny yellow). In the kitchen our accent appliances are red, so I'm thinking maybe more of a sunset-colour idea: red, orange, yellow accents. I don't know why the warm colours but they just make me feel cosy and happy.

One observation Audrey made was that the problem with a fresh coat of paint is that it makes everything else in the house look dingy.

Next on the agenda is putting up shelves and curtain rods, then, changing light fixtures (because the ones that came with the house are now looking terribly dated and ugly). We're thinking of something along the lines of sage-green-and-white cafe style curtains for the kitchen, as long as it's a print that doesn't scream: "I'm kitchen curtains -- don't you dare put me in the living room!"

I approve of any move away from beige! Red/cream/brown colours remind me of comfy warm things and also of shiny mechanical things, like classic cars and a beautiful portable typewriter I had once.

Especially since the beige this house came in was off-white-to-the-grey-side* -- the same color as the walls in the nursing home I was rehabbing in, actually...probably chosen for its cheapness.



*(and the ceilings and trim are still that color; we opted to only paint the walls)

I suppose a golden-browny beige could look all right in certain applications - and I can appreciate colour schemes of sandy sorts of colours freshened up with white, very restful. But beige generally combines the least appealing things about grey with the least appealing things about brown - and it never seems to go out of fashion, so you can't get away from it!

I'm glad my computer bits are all shiny black instead of the IBM nothing-but-beige of a decade ago.
