Indeed -- it is a motif. My own conjecture is that that's because being a smith is one of the ancient trades which was always relatively adaptable for/by someone with a mobility impairment -- especially for a wounded war vet who would have solid practical knowledge for what makes a good sword (or chariot fitting): it's a job that can be done sitting down, and it's also a job where it's commonly in a collaborative workshop environment (lots of apprentices running around), so if need be, you can delegate the physical labor you can't personally manage.

(*sigh* I just spent time deleting all the anonymous spam replies to that B.A.D.D. post with dubious Phishing links).
