Admission: I was inspired to include the fancy breakfast bread because of the trend of baking frog breads last spring and summer, and posting them on Tumblr, reinforced by the fact that frogs are often a symbol of fertility in many cultures (because of the number of eggs they lay). And I also wanted to give the reader (and my protagonist) reason to think the king is worthy of falling in love with, besides "Him so Pretty!" (Especially since my protagonist is both asexual and aromantic), and showing how he doesn't get insulted, and is willing to laugh at an awkward situation (and how he treats the servants with respect) is a speedrun to showing his true character as a person.

And as for the father's reaction, it always sort of bothered me that, in the original, the princess's father is domineering and patronizing, but then is perfectly happy to marry her off to a stranger he'd never even seen before, without questioning it even a little bit.
