You know the song "Lemon tree" -- The one Peter, Paul, and Mary made famous? It's got a catchy tune and all, but the lyrics are complete twaddle:

"Lemon tree very pretty, and the lemon flower is sweet,
But the fruit of that poor lemon is impossible to eat."

Excuse Me, But: Impossible?

Ever hear of Lemon-ade? Lemon custard? Poached Trout with Lemon?

Okay, so picking a lemon off the tree and biting into as if it were an apple would be diffecult -- but far from impossible. Anyone who believes so is a wimp of the highest order -- probably rewrites his will every time he stubs his toe.

Just for your edification, here are the lyrics to the last verse:

One day she left without a word, she took away the sun
And in the dark she left behind I knew what she had done
She left me for another, it's a common tale but true
A sadder man, but wiser, now I sing these words to you:

(that chorus)

Gee. She finally left him for another man. I wonder why. He claims to be wiser, but I doubt it.

I think it's impossible cuz it turns your mouth inside out and it's very hard to finish the lemon when your mouth is inside out. ;-)

(Silly lyrics or not, it's one of my favorite PP&M songs.)

Very hard, yes... but not impossible... And I did say it had a catchy tune...

Lemon custard is made with the rind, not the fruit, or it would curdle before it baked. Poached trout with lemon uses it as a garnish; the juice of the lemon may be eaten, but the pulp generally isn't. Most lemonade isn't made with lemons, and the average person would find fresh lemonade unpalatable (and, again, it's the juice rather than the fruit used in drinks).

Just to be equally pedantic. :)

Okay, okay... :-).

with a fruit as juicy as a lemon, though, it's hard to completely separate the pulp from the juice -- I can't help but think of Shylock and his problem of how to take a pound of flesh without taking a drop of blood. And I'm one of those rare persons who prefers fresh lemonade to evil potions like "Country Tyme"

And I admit that biting into a lemon and chowing down would be very, very diffecult (and it would take a lot of sugar to make it palatable), but "very very diffecult" is a long way from "impossible"
