On the painters'color wheel,* Orange is directly across the wheel from Blue. And so they are called "Complimentary." When you put a stripe of orange next to a stripe of blue, both look brighter. Other complimentary pairs are Red/Green and Yellow/Purple

*A painter's color wheel arranges colors by which frequencies of light they reflect (and therefore, also absorb) A "Light" color wheel arranges colors of emitted light (like on tv screens and computer monitor), and on that wheel, its Blue and yellow that are complimentary.
