CHENEY: Well, the reason they keep mentioning Halliburton is because they're trying to throw up a smokescreen. They know the charges are false.

They know that if you go, for example, to factcheck.com [sic], an independent Web site sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania, you can get the specific details with respect to Halliburton.

It's an effort that they've made repeatedly to try to confuse the voters and to raise questions, but there's no substance to the charges.

As I see it, the issue of Halliburton, whether or not Cheney was once its C.E.O., is central to the question of whether the Bush Administration is competent in conducting the war and rebuilding the peace. And isn't it the American people's right and duty to raise questions of their leaders and demand answers?

By the way: Before completing this post, I followed Cheney's advice, and put "factcheck.com" into Google. I was given a link that connected me to this site, instead. Oops. I don't think Cheney meant to do that, do you?

Still looking for the fact checking site .....
---
A few minutes later, I found the correct site (.org, not .com), and found the fact checking on the debate itself, which I posted.
---

When I checked those facts, this is what I found (just a few tidbits): Edwards was wrong when he said that Halliburton paid millions in fines while Cheney was C.E.O. The truth is, the corporation committed the wrongdoings while Cheney was C.E.O, and only paid the 7.3 million in fines this last August. Edwards was also wrong when he implied that Cheney was responsible for Halliburton's fiddling with its accounting books to make its profits seem bigger than they actually were (just like Enron). Cheney was innocent on that issue. ... But Halliburton did fiddle with its books, and still got the no-bid contract.

Edwards claims that about the over-all job loss since Bush came to power were also misleading. It's true that we've lost 1.7 million private sector jobs, and 2.6 million manufacturing jobs. But there's been a large increase in state and federal government jobs, so the total net loss, as of August (the last date we have stats for) is only 913,000. New stats come out day after tomorrow. Anyone out there who's looking for a job want to bet that we've added 913,001 jobs in the last two months? ;-)

So -- Edwards may not come out smelling like a rose, but Cheney still stinks.
