In this entry in her LJ, [livejournal.com profile] elementalmuse mentions checking readability statistics in WORD. However, I have an old version of MS Word (Windows 98) that doesn't include that feature.

So I was wondering: Can anyone out there recommend a stand-alone Flesh-Kincaid readability checker for me to download? It sure sounds like a nifty tool -- I can't write and count words at the same time!

I have Win98, but have Word2K on my computer. Word2K does Flesch-Kinkaid. You have to enable it, however. I think Word97 could do it as well.

Further to that, you can enable this feature in Word2K at least by going to Tools|Options|Spelling&Grammar and clicking on Show Readability Statistics which is at the bottom. Doesn't Word95 have this function as well?

Okay, I found it!

"Check readablity" was nearly invisible -- I had disabled "Check Grammar with Spelling" because the Grammar checker was so often wrong -- only knowing one rule, and trying to fit it everywhere. For example, it always wants me to write "If he was to do that..." instead of "If he were to do that, because 'he" is singular... even though "were" is correct when talking about speculation: wishes and ifs.

I wish I were able to take the programmer in hand, and lead him or her through some of the basics I learned from my English teachers.... ;-)
