1) Total number of films I own: 0 DVDs and 3 videos .... I think. My VCR has also been broken for years. so I haven't looked at my VHS stack in a while. The three videos are: "The Jester" with Danny Kaye, "Buckaroo Bonzai" with Peter Weller, and "Tomb of the Cybermen" with Patrick Troughton

2) The last film I bought: "The Jester"

3) The last film I watched:
a) In the theater?: Not sure. It was either "Gosford Park" or "Spirited Away" ... can't remember the order they came out.
b) On video, it was a library copy of "Pyramids of Mars" -- that's when I discovered my VCR was broken :-(

4) Five films that mean a lot to me:
a) Babbette's Feast (Danish, with English subtiles --1987)
b) Spirited Away
c) Kenneth Branaugh's version of Henry V
d) Olivier's King Lear (done for TV -- 1984)
e) And um... I dunno... can I cheat? If so, I'll say: "It's not been made into a movie yet, but I want it to be, dammit: Shakespeare's "Winter's Tale". If I can't, I'll say: "The Jester," 'cause it was fun and sentimental, and I love the lullabye Kaye sings ...

5) five that I tag next: [livejournal.com profile] elementalmuse, [livejournal.com profile] alryssa, [livejournal.com profile] clamnebula, [livejournal.com profile] lizziebelle, [livejournal.com profile] heronheart.

"The Jester" with Danny Kaye
(sings:) "An unemployed jester... is nobody's fool!"

Babbette's Feast (English, with Danish subtiles --1987)
*inquisitive eyebrow movement* Not the other way around? I'm pretty sure it was Danish with English subtitles when I saw it...

It's not been made into a movie yet, but I want it to be, dammit: Shakespeare's "Winter's Tale".
For what it's worth, the BBC did a television version in 1980 (the bear was played by a Doctor Who-veteran man-in-suit, although not alas the same one who played Aggedor). The video's out of print, though, and it hasn't been released on DVD (yet?).

Yes. you're right. I shall go back and edit...

Was that BBC Television version of Winters Tale done as part of the Complete Shakepeare Plays series?

It was that series that got me hooked on Shakespeare, in the first place, before official instruction began in school. ... I stumbled on "As you like it" on PBS one rainy Sunday, and was soon entranced, in part, because of the wonderful subversiveness of discovering that the great, incomprehensible Bard was both understandable and funny -- heady, subversive stuff, for a teenager.

No... What I'm really wishing for is a theatrical movie release, such as the kind that that Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet so often get. WT is not wellknown enough; it has Pathos and Romance, and political subversiveness (you can see inklings of the coming of democratic principles in its lines), and strong, intelligent, independant women characters -- especially the lady Paulina...

Yes, it was. I realised that it wasn't what you were after, but I figured it might be some consolation (and you did list a television version of something else in your list).

And for all the film versions of Hamlet I've seen, I still think the Complete Shakespeare Plays version is better than any of the theatrical movie versions.

*nods. It so often cut and reedited, and reshaped to highlight a particular director's Grand Vision, and the original author had actually thought very carefully about each of the scenes, and each of the words in them. Yes, it's long. But it's long for a reason.

One of the main reasons I want lesser-known plays like Winter's Tale made into films is that I want to "Share de lurve, man!" (If I ever get the ear of a movie director, I'd also make a pitch for Cymbeline). So many people get Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet shoved down their throats in school, end up not liking them, and deciding they don't like Shakespeare at all.

Hi Ann,
Sorry I haven't caught up with you on this yet, but I've had my 2nd major computer breakdown of the year, and I may be without my laptop for the next few weeks. In the meantime, I'll be checking my e-mail and other stuff wherever I can (currently at the library of my collegiate alma mater, UNC-G). In the meantime, just for the record, I have maybe 20-30 DVDs by now, but no earthly idea how many videotapes!
