Just didn't expect it to become relevant again so soon. ;_;
Terrorism is a Political Philosophy
Ever since September 11, 2001, the predominant rhetoric has made it seem as if terrorism is a foreign country, of the sort one can wage war against. But Terrorism is a philosophy -- a belief about basic humann nature and the societies that humans create for themselves (that fear is the strongest emotion, and therefore the best means to achieve your end). And no matter how abhorant, you cannot defeat any belief with guns -- only with better, stronger, beliefs.
To quote Uncle from The Jackie Chan Adventures: "Aye-Ya! Magic must defeat Magic!"
The only thing I feel moved to say now, Pete Seeger wrote into a song, in 1973:
My Rainbow Race
One blue sky above us,
One ocean, lapping all our shores.
One earth so green and round,
Who could ask for more?
And because I love you
I'll give it one more try
To show my rainbow race
It's too soon to die.
Some folks want to be like an ostrich;
Bury their heads in the sand
Some hope for plastic dreams
To unclench all those greedy hands.
Some want to take the easy way:
Poisons, bombs! They think we need 'em.
Don't they know you can't kill all the unbelievers.
There's no shortcut to freedom
One blue sky above us,
One ocean, lapping all our shores.
One earth so green and round,
Who could ask for more?
And because I love you
I'll give it one more try.
To show my rainbow race
It's too soon to die.
Go tell, go tell all the little children!
Go tell mothers and fathers, too:
Now's our last chance to learn to share
What's been given to me and you
One blue sky above us,
One ocean, lapping all our shores.
One earth so green and round,
Who could ask for more?
[P.S. The first thought I had after hearing a report of Dubya's reaction to the news was: "Now maybe he'll learn something about how grown-ups react to a situation like this." Was that naughty of me? ;-)]
