In my last post, I mentioned that there were some "annoying" and "bletchy" things going on, and tonight "Sad" can be added to the list.

But I still don't feel like throwing a pity party, just yet (I'll go into that, tomorrow, maybe. I'll see how I feel about it after sleep).

Instead, right this very minute, I am going to subject you to WriMoSpam!

Yes, folks, it's the wordcount meter!

15,140 / 50,000
(30.3%)

At this rate (assuming I can keep it up, which is no guarruntee), I'll be able to make it to the finish line on time, even with the Art Garden interuption....

Keep your fingers crossed for me, folks! And remember: long, rambling tangents are your friends! And so are characters with three first names. Use all the names together at any--and every--oportunity, along with any and all official titles. Strunk and White be damned!

(am I the only one here who gets that last reference? Oh, well).

Which reference? I've got a copy of Strunk and White, if that's what you mean. It's at times a little more didactic than I'm comfortable with, but overall an interesting and useful little book.

Also, I loved The Trumpet of the Swan as a kid.

Yup. That's the one I meant.

And Stuart Little...

I read Stuart Little. And Charlotte's Web, of course. But neither of them spoke to me the same way Trumpet of the Swan did. I have no idea why.

I occasionally wonder if this book subconsciously influenced my decision to play the trumpet in fifth grade. Everyone who was interested in joining the band met with the band teacher and tried the various instruments. I went in thinking I'd play flute or clarinet and came out determined to play trumpet. This surprised the heck out of my parents because I've always been a quiet person. In truth, I never had the trumpet personality and switched to French horn in the tenth grade, at the recommendation of my band director (a different one). Still, I enjoyed the trumpet while I played.

Stuart Little spoke to me because the hero was a tiny mouse born into a human family, and the doctor had to weigh him on a letter scale (in other words, he really was human, just with a mouse body).

When I was born, I was the smallest baby yet to survive at that hospital (in 1964) -- I was just over 2 pounds. Stuart was a fully respected member of the family, even if he did have to find new ways to do things (the summer that my mother read all three books to me, I was in a full body cast from chest to toes; got around the house on a homemade skateboard like thingie, and ate supper with the family by lying on the dinner table. ... so I could relate).

I think they ruined Stuart Little in the movie right from the beginning, when they made him a regular mouse who wanted to fool people into adopting him into a human family. Missed the point entirely, if you ask me.

I hear you!

I'm not doing NaNo, but I am trying to keep my word count up, and the fact that one of the characters in the present work is known only as "the man who looked like the Doctor but wasn't" is doing wonders in that regard. :)

Heh!

This is my first time doing NaNo, and so far, the experience reminds me of playing with mud pies, as a wee little kidling -- only instead of mixing sand, loam, clay and water, we're mixing nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs.

It really is great fun, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's squeamish about making a mess.
