Amid all the news of deadly stampedes, and the extinction of a hundred species of frogs directly linked to global warming in Central America, there was, indeed, a bit of good news to wake up to: they've put all of Mozart's musical diaries online, and discovered new pieces they never even knew existed, before.

Tra-la-la!

(I like Mozart. He tended to write cheeful stuff. Unlike Lidzt, who, more often then not, just tried to be complicated and clever for cleverness' sake).

Yeah, but Lizst has that fun music that, when I listen to it, I can't help but think of the music that goes with silent movie melodramas.

You know -- the kind of movie with a mustache-twirling villain and a damsel tied to railroad tracks.

No I don't know which piece it is; only that it's one of the Hungarian Rhapsodies.

Okay, my musical tastes were weird when I was younger.

Okay, that hasn't changed much.

Yes. His Hungarian Rhapsodies were fun... I think a few were used as background music for Bugs Bunny cartoons, too.

But the trend, on the whole is toward: "look how clever I am!"

Of course, maybe my Mozart bias started in elementary/early high school, and my radio alarm was set to the local classical music station, and the "mostly Mozart" program started the hour I had to wake up (Plus, it's hard to beat Pappagano's theme from The Magic Flute).

That seems very appropriate, somehow.

I wonder how many people got their introduction to classical music via Looney Tunes.

quite a lot, I imagine, especially considering that the cartoons started out as trailers in movie theaters back in the '50's (I think -- can't trust my sense of chronology at this hour), as well as being syndicated on tv afternoons for, like, ever after that... though not any more. Now, WB cartoons are all about fighting crime in dark, dystopian, post-appocolyptic worlds...

:::Sigh:::

Today, on Jeopardy!, the teenage returning champion completely missed the Daffy Duck clue...
