Last night (early this morning), I was watching a repeat of the latest Mystery! episode, and noticed the name "David Troughton" in the credits. I didn't recognize anyone as having a family resemblance to the Second Doctor, so I did a quick check on the Mystery! website, later. Yes, it turns out that the David Troughton who played the sidekick detective is the son of Patrick Troughton, and he is also one of the chief actors in the Royal Shakespeare Company...

And in the preface to the First Folio of 1623, there is a list of
The Names of the Pricipall Actors
in all thefe plays

Among them, given 20th billing out of 26, is one William Ecclestone.

I just think that's kind of neat.

It almost calls for a fanfic, especially since the Fourth Doctor claimed to have acted as scrivner for Shakespeare, when he was writing Hamlet (City of Death).

David Troughton also appeared in Doctor Who, as King Peladon in The Curse Of Peladon. His brother Michael is also an actor, most well known over here for appearing as Piers, the put upon lackey of MP Alan B'Stard in comedy The New Statesman.

Yes... I was particularly impressed with this (http://www.shillpages.com/dw/story/d3/st--3m33.jpg) picture (and that collar looks suspiciously like something recycled for "Deadly Assassin," no?). But nepotism in the halls of the Beeb doesn't surprise me, much.

The last thing I saw him in was as Toby Belch in a recent TV version of 'Twelfth Night' (I don't know if you've seen it: it's in modern dress, in Bollywood musical stylee, and several key characters including Viola and her brother are portrayed as Asian immigrants). He looks more like his father at 53 than he did at 22; they've aged in similar ways.

I've not seen that production; the last one I saw was a "Live from Lincoln Center" program on PBS, with Helen Hunt as Viola.

I didn't see the resemblance right away on the TV, but I did see it, right off the bat, when I saw the still photo on the Mystery website, here:

David Troughton as Detective Sergeant Clive Harvey (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/mystery/jericho/actors.html#troughton)

I think one reason why I failed to recognize him was that he didn't sound like his father in this show. 'Course, that's part of being an actor -- a 1950's working class London copper wouldn't sound at all like a Time Lord, would he? ;-)
