Yay!! One step closer to going to Gally!!
Jul. 23rd, 2003 12:39 pmLast week I was telling my aide that I was thinking of going to the Gallifrey convention in Feb, and that I was excited and worried about trying figure out how to get there -- navigating a bus or train station alone going through security, etc.
And she asked: "When is it"
Me: "Mid February."
She: "Well, I could drive you..."
Me: (!)
She: We could rent a wheelchair van, because this one is too old to make it that far...
Me: Right. ... And we'd have to make sure there were barrier-free motel rooms along the way.
She: Well, it would take planning our route ahead...
Me: Right. ...
I let the matter drop a couple of days, because this is the last thing I'd expect her to volunteer for... I mean, I science fiction is not prominant on her reading list (her idea of reading for fun is scholarly works on obscure mythologies), and she hadn't even heard of Doctor Who until I mentioned it a couple of years ago... To which her response was "Hm."
But last night, I asked her again if her offer was serious, and she said: "Yes" ... Turns out she likes to drive across country...
Not to say I don't have misgivings.
For one thing, she's heavy smoker, and I've discovered (from hanging around her and her friends) that second hand cigarette smoke is one of my triggers for migraines. She's very good about not smoking in my house, but I'm not about to ask her to quit for two weeks while I share a van and motel/hotel rooms with her (the drive between Chesapeake and LA will likely be 5 days each way, so the trip would be 14-15 days, total), as she also has a nasty temper when she's agitated.
And what with the cost of renting the van, buying gas, paying for motel rooms and food along the way (not to mention her salery for 14 days overtime), it will likely end up being more expensive than a couple of plane tickets.
However, if I let my misgivings set my limits, my life will never change. So here goes!
Now, I'm debating whether to contact Air-tel directly, and ask them to make surre there is a barrier-free double occupancy in the block of rooms, or emailing Shaun, and asking *him* to do it... What do you think?
