Oh, hush! I did, too wait until after midnight (just barely, though)! I'm no cheater!

It's just that I have to go grocery shopping in about 13 hours, at the hottest time of the day, on the day predicted to be the hottest of the summer so far. And grocery shopping nearly always leaves me feeling frazzled, anyway. And so I was feeling doubtful that I'd be feeling very artsy after I got back, and I was feeling unrestful right now, and there was this blue watercolor pencil just sitting there by my computer mouse ... so I thought... "Why not?"

So I went into my second bathroom and drew this (click here). It's a (very) quick sketch of my own left eye as seen in the mirror, done on the backside of a page of watercolor paper, and is about 3x4" (guesstimate), though it was drawn on a 9x12 piece of paper.

If my dad is reading this, he'll recognize it as the sister of another self purtrait I did over 20 years ago of my right eye in the mirror, that I did in charcoal; that one, I did on a 12x18" sheet of paper, and I filled the whole page. That earlier picture was a lot easier to draw. And I think it's more than just I was more practiced back then, and that it's easier to get highlights and shadows with charcoal (though both those things are big factors).

I think it was harder to draw my left eye, because when I'm drawing, that eye becomes my dominant one (since that's the one that's controlled by the right side of the brain -- the side used for spatial and relational awareness). And I was getting all tense because I was trying to scan my reflection with my left eye while worrying about keeping my eye still, so I could draw it... and, yeah.

Maybe tomorrow, I'll try drawing my right eye again, and see if my theory holds up. Maybe ... or maybe not.... I might also get the urge to do something artsy after I come back from shopping, after all... But writing this entry has taken 35 minutes, and I'm finally feeling sleepy-ish. So I think I will trundle off to bed (finally).

[ETA: (after waking, this morning) I'm thinking of using computer graphics to put a frame around the gif, and printing it out to complete the first day's art thing, and then adding to and/or altering the original sketch to make more art from that one seed point (it's such a small patch of blue on the whole paper, and would be kind of neat, I think, as part of a collage). Then I could hang all the art around my house, and stare at my guests from unexpected places. Bwa-ha-ha-ha!]

That's fantastic! It's a very intense-looking eye, too.

Thank you!

The intensity could be because of:
    a) my brow was furrowed in concentration
    b) my proportion was off (out of proactice)
    c) I was trying not to laugh at Trixie, who had jumped up on the bathroom counter, and was peeking at me over the edge of my drawing pad, or
    d)All of the above.

Probably d.

Art, yay!

I like the way you're thinking about series and this is the second work in a series but could also be the first work in a different series.

I look forward to seeing more of your work as the month progresses.
