So I'm loving this shiny new everything, but -- the resolution is so high that the fonts on LJ are now teensy-tiny (I had my lj customized to show Garamond at 14pt size, but it looked more like 2pt). I know I can set IE to show me the font bigger, but I didn't really want to run both IE and aol at the same time, especially since it only my LJ that I was having trouble reading ("Only LJ" she says -- huh!). So I went back and changed my settings to 36pt (Now, it looks like a normal 10).

So -- tell me: did it look tiny to all of you, too? Or did it always look normal, and now it looks giant?

If it's the latter, I'll change it back, and go ahead and use IE...

ETA: Oh, and about restocking my software for this thing: my aide tells me that Google has a new word processing program out there, that's supposedly comparible to Microsoft's? Do any of you guys know about that?

Your journal, you mean? It's always been and still is a totally normal size, yes. I'm not sure if that's what you mean, sorry if I'm non understanding.

Hmmm... I changed it from 14pt to 36pt yesterda, and it looks the same to you? Odd.

Unless the changes I thought I'd made didn't take, and I'm just getting used to the teeny-tiny...

I think so. That is quite odd. But good. Yes.

I hate to be one of those annoying nerds that's always recommending the use of Firefox, but you might like to try using Firefox.

Among about a zillion other advantages over IE, it allows you to immediately increase or decrease the font size with CTRL+ or CTRL-, even on sites that when viewed in IE set font sizes in stone and defy all attempts at scaling.

I don't know what it was like before, because I always read your journal off my friends list. Right now, it's appearing as 10pt Garamond in IE, and my default font in Netscape.

I've just had a look at your source code, and it says:

font-family: "Garamond", "Garamond", "Garamond", sans-serif 48pt;

Which is broken in at least two different ways, and Netscape is quite right to be ignoring it.

What it should say is something like:

font-family: "Garamond", serif; font-size: 48pt;

Ah, thanks. I'd just copied the coding provided by LJ, and put in my number variables way back when (like 3 years ago). Since I didn't know what it was supposed to be, I didn't catch the mistakes. I'll go fix it now...

Also: If the problem is that the screen resolution is too high, had you considered just changing the screen resolution?

I actually considered that... But, other than tiny fonts, the higher resolution makes other aspects of reading lj and other websites (such as layoouts)a hell of a lot easier, so I don't want to throww out the baby with the bath water.

re: Office software, eg word processor and so on ...

There is a very competent alternative to Microsoft's Suite of products called Open Office. It's freely downloadable from www.openoffice.org (although, beware, it's a BIG download).

There's also something called Abiword, which I've never tried, but generally gets favourable mentions from other geek types. I believe it's smaller and lighter than OpenOffice. http://www.abisource.com/

Thanks, Spoo! I'll check them out.

It may be those programs my aide was thinking of (which she heard about from someone who found it through googling [?]).

Google is indeed working on a Word Processor, but I'm with Spoo in recommending OpenOffice.org. We use the "pay for" version called StarOffice in school, but only cuz it has clipart & schools get it for free. Otherwise we'd be using OpenOffice.org.

Heh - that's my default icon for computer issues. After all, it's a kind of magic. :-)

A little searching in Google shows me that writely.com is the site that Google bought. Online word processor. http://www.writely.com/

Yeah. I was thinking it was an online thing. Good to know about if I'm writing while traveling, maybes, and probably worth bookmarking. But I prefer something I can download to my own machine.

Now, I'm just debating whether I want OpenOffice (which I assume has all the program applications of MicrosoftOffice) or Abiword (which I assume is just the word processor, which is what I'll be using 99.99999% of the time).

Now, does anyone have suggestions for a desktop publishing program? One came preloaded on my old Gateway, but I forget the name.. Home...something, I think. Another of the microsoft clan.
