(from the way it usually does, that is)
Usually, when a song comes along, it comes into my head word-first. It's often a specific phrase with a rhythm that catches my ear, which I then expand upon, and add a tune to match the mood. Or it may be an idea, or a statement of belief, that can be put into words, if I think about it a moment.
But over the last week or so, I've had a rather sad pair of notes kind of bouncing around the inside of my head, like a bumble bee flying against a closed window, trying to figure out why it can't get to that blue sky.
So I've been doodling on my old Yamaha keyboard the last couple of days, and I finally worked the tune out where it reaches a comfortable conclusion. It turns out the key is D minor; I didn't know that when I started, but after doing some Googling for tutorials on keys and modes, I realized that's what it is exactly. It's short -- only 8 measures -- and feels like it now wants words.
But here's the thing: I'm completely stumped as to what those words should be. I don't even have an idea for those words, except that they'd be sad, and maybe lonely, or maybe angry, or maybe any combination of those things.
I've often been stumped and confused over getting a tune to sound right. But I've never been stumped by the lyrics before.
Anyway, if you want to hear the tune (and maybe give me some suggestions), copy the bold text below, paste it into the text window of the Tune-o-Tron Converter, and click [Submit]. That will bring up a Web page with a score, and also a link to click to hear a midi.
