Went to the library, today...
Oct. 12th, 2006 07:38 pmThe rant that's been building in my head the last few weeks (That I've been debating with myself over whether to post it here) was inspired by a radio interview with with Sam Harris, to mark the publication of his new book Letter to a Christian Nation. In the interview, he was making the argument that all religion is dangerous, and that the moderates are just as bad as the extremists. The rant is my head is what I would say to him in an imagined chat over a cup of coffee and a shared plate of cookies -- where I agree with him, and where I would disagree. When I woke up this morning, I was planning on going back and listening to the interview again, via the 'Nets.
But today at the library, they had Letter to a Christian Nation on their non-fiction Bestsellers shelf (They actually had several copies; I guess the predominately Christian clientelle wasn't as interested in reading that as they were Bill O'Reilly's book).
So that rant is coming, but I'll be writing it in resposnse to Harris's whole book, rather than the interview about it. It'll be easier to go back and pick out specific quotes, anyway.
And then, to lighten things up, I snapped up a new(ish) book by Berkeley Breathed (of Bloom County fame): Flawed Dogs: the Year-End Leftovers at the Piddleton "Last Chance" Dog Pound and UG: Boy Genius of the Stone Age by Raymond Briggs (of The Snowman fame).
Should be a fun mix -- even Letter ... is a slender volume, and should go quickly.
