It's an illustration of "Old Christmas" from The Book of Christmas, published in 1898 (I copied it from Santa Claus: last of the Wild Men: the Origin and Evolution of Saint Nicholas Over 50,000 Years by Phyllis Siefker, 1997)
That's the baby New Year asleep in the crook of one arm, on which he's carrying a picnic basket with a loaf of bread and a bottle of wine. And that steaming bowl in the other hand is Jolly Wassail.

Date: 2006-12-17 08:32 pm (UTC)And it's old illustrations like this one that make me really doubt that Old Nicholas has any real connection to the sanctified Nicholas, Bishop of Myra. I mean, come on, could you see that fellow earning the epitaph "Defender of the Orthodoxy"?
