Finally decided to get a paid account...
Apr. 4th, 2003 03:54 pmmainly because I want to add more icons for myself... And I just completed my first one. :-) Like it?
Many, many years ago, I read an article in a mythology magazine about the symbolism of the Capricorn creature (head and forelegs of a goat, with the tail of a fish -- you can kinda imagine it if you look at the astrological symbol for the sign). Anyway, this article said that the fish-goat represented personal, spiritual evolution.
The creature started out as all fish, in the depths of the ocean, but then climbed out toward land, and up a mountain, evolving into a goat as it does so, and what we see in the Capricorn beast is the creature in the middle of the process (... and I think this symbolism was devised by the Renaissance alchamists -- long before the theory of evolution was codified by Darwin -- isn't it neat how art and dreams are way ahead of hard science? Anyway, I think so). When it reaches the summit of the mountain, the goat will be fully evolved into a unicorn -- the opposing forces of light and dark within her own personality (light and dark, fear and love, etc) -- her two horns -- will be merged into one single force, that aims straight at all obstacles and overcomes them.
"CapriUni," my aol screen name, as well as my identity in as many forums as will allow it (a few don't let you use your email address) is a merging of "Capricorn" and "Unicorn." I took it for myself at a time when I needed to draw on my inner strength, and confront a manipulative man who was using the persona of a spiritual leader to get power for himself, and I wanted to spear his ugly troll butt! [menacing cackle]!
And I've kept it ever since as a reminder that climbing this damned steep mountain called "life" is something I have the strength to do, and once I get to the summit, there will be no stopping me. >;-)
So, now you know what "CapriUni" means... it has nothing to do with the Island of Capri.
I'll probably use this icon when I'm in the mood to skewer some troll butts, and also to support friends who are battling trolls of their own.
Right now, I just wanted to show it to you guys... I think it would make a faboo button or t-shirt, too, for when I'm going to meet up with online friends.... doncha think?

Date: 2003-04-04 01:02 pm (UTC)It'd make a great button and T-Shirt!
Thank you muchly!
Date: 2003-04-04 02:52 pm (UTC)For a button, I think I'd leave it as is. But for a t-shirt, I think it would look better if the point of the horn formed the dot on the first i instead of the second....

Date: 2003-04-04 08:34 pm (UTC)You mean the dragon icon that is on your reply, now? You're right... that would make a cool button. And I'd know you right away if I saw you wearing it :-)
Regarding the "CapriUni" above, I was just thinking that it doesn't look like it's in much of of a troll-spearing mood. Does it? More pleased that all the (nasty) trolls are behind it...
Maybe I'll use this one for "Accomplished," and make an angrier looking one for when I'm in a fightin' mood...

Date: 2003-04-04 01:50 pm (UTC)Or the Ford Capri, a staple of late 70s/early 80s British cop shows. :)
For some reason I always thought it might be a university related thing because of the Uni part, but never quite got round to asking about it (no-one's never had to ask about my real e-mail addresses, since they're pretty obvious).
(potters of to do a bit of name research of his own...)
Except....

Well, wasn't the Ford Capri named for the island Capri -- you know, to give it an air of exotic elegance or somesuch?
As for your email name, the only people who'd have to ask are those who know nothing of early Doctor Who... And why would you want to talk with them, anyway, right? ;-P
Cool!!!

Date: 2003-04-04 05:41 pm (UTC)From Parabola: The magazine of myth and meaning ... I forget which volume and issue number, but it was the issue about mountains. I'll look through the bookshelves when it's daylight, for the specific issue.
I subscribed for years... used to have a lot of articles on Goddess and Eastern traditions, and then gradually shifted to focus more on the Judeo-Christian-Islamic faiths, and I eventually lost interest.
Still, it was, and I suppose still is, the most scholarly periodical on the subject of myths I've come across.

heh, heh...
