You tap out an experimental rhythm on the "bug's" back (which lights up, btw). Then you can adjust the pitch with one "antenna," and elaborate the rhythm with the other... when you're happy with the result, you can zap it into the hard drive of your computer, or have a "rhythm battle" with another beat bug user...
