A little background info for overseas friends:
Back in the '80's (I think it was) some sadist sicko took a bottle of Tylonol off a supermarket shelf, slipped in some arsenic, and put it back. A woman bought the Tylonol, took it, and died of arsenic poisoning. Ever since then, over the counter medications and many foods come with "tamper proof" seals (you can tamper with them, but if you do, you can't put it back the way it came).
Well, just now I opened a new jar of Ovaltine (chocolate malt) to mix with my coffee and milk. When I unscrewed the lid, and went to punch through the paper seal printed all over with "Sealed for your protection," I saw that it wasn't sealed. There was no glue at all holding it down, except in one small area. The paper was just flopping -- loose.
Now, I'm not a stickler for germ safety in my food -- I figure an immune system is like a muscle: you've got to give it some work to do for it to remain strong. But poison is another thing entirely.
I like to think the best of people, and presume every human on the planet is wise and kind until proven otherwise. Perhaps it was just a fluke at the factory, and the gluing machine ran out of glue. But some proofs are too hard to take.
I put the lid back on, and had plain chocolate, instead.
I'm wondering now if I should go back to the store and return the bottle and show it to them... Won't be able to do that until tormorrow at the earliest, in any case.
But just the idea of the possibility of another sicko out there trying this....
:::Shudder:::
