Now There's An Idea!
May. 19th, 2003 11:36 amEver since I was a teenager, one of my hobbies has been hand decorating wearable art (sweatshirts, sweatpants, tees, etc.), and for years now, ever since the trend in "message t's" hit (tees and sweatshirts with smart-alecky comments and advertising plastered across them), I've had the idea starting my own business by putting original poetry on shirts, along with artwork -- short poems like haiku and free verse, that kind of thing.
And I'd call my business "Off the Cuff" ;-)
I figured that if just one person wore my shirt on the bus or subway, more people would read my work and get enjoyment from it (I hope they'd enjoy it) than if I got published in a prestigious literary magazine --- which has clout, but not wide distribution. And it would also be a nice, if small antidote to all the smark-alecky comments and advertising that we can't get away from (the sinister firt seeds of popup advertising?).
But the idea of setting up the logistics of a workshop, and the pressure of keeping up with orders if it was actually a success (long shot, but hey...) -- not to mention keeping accounting books and promoting put me off the idea.
But I was just checking out CafePress.com, to see if I want to by an /Ozy and Millie shirt, and saw that they will print any artwork and/or message... with no upfront cost.
So what do you think? Should I try it? Would you buy something with a poem I wrote on it? ... Well, if you really wanted one, and were a true friend (not someone who kinda knows me, 'cause we met that one time), I'd probably give you a shirt as a pressie... but do you think other people would buy a shirt with a poem I wrote on it?
Just a thought...
