"Revenge of the Cybermen" Part One

Non-spoiler review: As per usual, the special effects are laughable by today's standards (which is hardly fair to say), but the psychological tension and general structure of the plot far outshines (imnsho) the vast majority of today's primetime lineup (Hello, CSI: Miami. I am, in fact, talking about you. That's what you get for being on my TV at the same time as Doctor Who, so I catch a glimpse of you when I change stations after Who's closing credits. If you insist on putting yourself up for comparison like that, you will lose.).

Point of fact: Tom Baker > David Caruso. Just saying.

I like the design of the cybermats in Troughton's Tomb, better. But this story does make it a bit clearer about the exact nature of the threat they represent (and yes, I realize they probably changed the nature of threat for this story).

You will find in the coming episodes some oddities in the behavior of the Cybermen which are at odds with what we thought we understood about them. I'll be interested to read your reactions.

Trivia: I once read a British fanzine complain about Christopher Robbie's Aussie accent. To this day, I can't pick it out of the Cyberleader's sound.

Trivia: they put some double-barrelled talent under those dense Vogan masks.

Tyrum is played by Kevin Stoney, the mastermind Vaughn in the previous Cyberman story (way back in Troughton's last season).

David Collings (Vorus) makes his Who debut here. He'll return as Poul in Robots of Death and the title character in Mawdryn Undead.
