Hee! Yay!

You know, I think the fandom for the movie The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai: Across the Eighth Dimension must be one of the smallest in all of skiffydom. Even smaller than the fandom for OldSchool Who, in America, before PBS started airing the episodes.

I've come to this conclusion because I just got the idea in my head to make an icon out of a quote from the movie, to use when I complain here about how someone, somewhere, has gotten accessibility wrong -- like when they a flight of steps in front of an elevator, or when the only wheelchair accessible doors to a university cafeteria leads to two very heavy doors that must always be locked (both of which I've encountered). And that quote is:

It's like one of our thermopods ... but it's a very bad design.

So I did a Google Image search for screencaps of the thermopod interior, and found ...0 (zero) hits. Nor could I find the above quote in any online archive.

But I did find the Official Banzai Institute Homepage!

Yay!!

Traffic there is light (the latest letter in the official forum is from almost two years ago). But it atent dead yet -- there's a message there from Dr. Banzai about the election of Obama.

(I just have to tell the people who don't know me as long as some other people: this movie was a major Mother-Daughter Bonding Agent, and provided inside family jokes from the time we both popped into the theater to see it on a whim, while we were in town, until each of my parents' deaths)

So I have to take a break from not writing my BADD post to share the goodness.

I lovelovelove that film, and I'd dug that site since the start, but I hadn't thought to check in on it in ages. Thanks for the heads-up!

I totally can't get enough of how they keep their alternate reality built up around things, staying in-character on the site, in interviews, on the DVD extras, and so on. With any other source material it all might seriously toe the cheesiness line, but with Buckaroo Banzai it's all exactly right somehow.

I know... It's great. I think it's partly because of how the film was written, with the Blue Blaze regulars in the plot, and the music, and comic books and video games.

I'm just (kinda, sorta) sad the fandom seems to be so small... I wish there were more people with whom to share the inside jokes.

At least, now I know you'd get them...

Yeah, I'm thinking I will have to get the dvd... if I want to make that icon. ;-) I have the vhs tape, but no player for it, anymore.

I forgot about that site completely, I had it bookmarked ages ago, before the second Gally trip (where I bought the DVD, which is full of extra nifty) and it has a picture of Pecos on the page.

I still shout "PLANET 10!" whenever a videogame or movie says "Where are we going?"

Traveling between here and The Art Garden means going a long stretch through New Jersy.

...Sooner or later, while on the NJ Turnpike, the phrase: "Warning: We are not in the Eighth Dimension!" will pop into my head. :-)
