capri0mniOne of my all-time favorite stories, from the Ukraine The Miracle of the Spider and the Yalynka (Christmas tree). I love spiders, and this story could be thought of as an ancestor to E. B. White's Charlette's Web.
There's a German version of this legend, too, but in that one, the Christ Child comes and turns all the spiderwebs to silver, because the "plain" ones are too messy -- thus giving us the origin of tinsel. I prefer this story, because here, the spider's web is seen as beautiful as is.
