But I'm teaching myself to acquire it: Cocoa -- straight. No milk. No sweetener.

Yes, it's bitter. The word "Chocolate" comes from the Aztec for "bitter water." But it's not as bitter as coffee with no milk or sweetener, and there are lots of folks who drink that everyday, and they don't get wierd looks.

Why bother? I can hear you muttering (oh, yes I can! even through my modem line). Why even go through the work of acquiring it? Why not just eat your chocolate sweet, like the rest of us?

First -- I am a chocoholic. A good strong cup of cocoa gives me a serious buzz -- it almost feels like there are little sparklers going off in my brain, right behind my eyes. And even though chocolate is often flagged as the trigger for migraines, when that time of the month rolls 'round, and I am plagued with 'em, a good dose of chocolate seems to be the only thing that will shut 'em down. And it's also (for me, at least) an ... uhm ... aphrodisiac. So I am not giving up chocolate -- no way, no how.

But, over the last decade or so, imbibing all the sugar that usually goes with chocolate has contributed to the ballooning of my waistline. Therefore: keep the chocolate, lose the sugar.

Why not use a no-cal sweetener, then?

Second -- I have a theory that once I disassociate "sweet" from the thing I most crave, I'll curb my craving for all sweets -- including cookies and pies and such. (time will tell if my theory holds water)... though I may still enjoy a little sweetness now and then.

And third -- there's a bit of a "whimp/snob" factor going on: the Aztecs drank their chocolate without milk or sweetener for generations. And they're the ones who invented the drink. The snobby part of my brain says: "Drinking it straight is the right way to drink it! It's the Europeans who thought they could improve on it by adding milk and sugar" ... (and we all know how effective and beneficial their judgements were to the life in Central and South America).

So there!

Wish me luck!

The Aztecs also played baseball as a blood sport. But hey. ;)

Or a game that was a combination Basketball / Soccer . . .

I thought the game involved a stick or a bat. Maybe not.

Nope -- just the players' hips and feet, to get the ball through a stone ring high on a wall, thusly:
