Not 5 Things, Not Friday:

2-a) Praising what I enjoyed before criticizing what I didn't about the Doctor Who episode "The Woman Who Lived":
i) The setting
ii) The Doctor as sidekick
iii) Capaldi's grin when "Me" realized she cared about people, after all.
iv) The "Me" gag.*
2-b) Criticizing what I didn't:
i) The loss of Ashildr, the storyteller -- especially since it was without explanation, or mention.
ii) That it was the second story in the season (after the Fisher King) in which the Big Bad was out to kill humans for no apparent reason. That's just not what Doctor Who is about. At least the Mire were harvesting humans for consumption.
iii) That they'd created Leandro (really?) and didn't play on the Beauty and the Beast angle.
*3) I used that gag once, when I was about ten (maybe eight?). We were about to get on an airplane for a family trip, and one of the stewardesses crouched down to my eye level, and said, in a tone usually reserved for puppies who aren't yet weaned:
"And what's your name?
(With my best growl voice): "I'm Me!"
"'Mi' -- what a pretty name!"
... At which point my mother coughed, and said we really needed to hurry and board, before I said something rude about the woman's intelligence. ...And that was the first lesson I had on how some people are immune to sarcasm.
4) The most recent "Robot Hugs" Strip: http://www.robot-hugs.com/bridal-party/
Considering how close we are to Halloween, I was kind of expecting the central character to be in costume, in the final panel.
5) Putting this behind a cut, because I'm mostly Not!Evil... Posting it at all because I'm a Bit!Evil:
An itsy-bitsy earworm climbed up inside my head --
Turned on the radio for a different song instead.
I heard a brand new tune,
And it had a strong refrain.
Now I've got a brand new earworm
That's stuck inside my brain.
6) An update on adding split pea protein powder to my diet (On healthcare-provider's recommendation): It's still totally grabbing on to the acidic flavor compounds in whatever beverage I blend it into. This makes coffee taste tasteless, but it makes strong, acidic, juices (such as unsweetened pomegranate juice) less puckery without sugar. But, for me, it turns out most palatable with pureed veggies as a thickener for soups and sauces.

[S]ociety has lied to them about who they were. They had intellectual disabilities, true, but that didn't mean what they'd been told - that they couldn't learn, they couldn't grow, they couldn't figure things out.

Date: 2015-10-28 04:50 pm (UTC)I also recently met Mitzie Collins (but she hasn't tried to earworm me yet):

Date: 2015-10-28 06:06 pm (UTC)Oh, and I can now confirm that the lyrics to "The Prickly Bush" scan just as well to "Itsy-Bitsy Spider" (curse you, Common Meter!).

Date: 2015-10-28 08:19 pm (UTC)Luckily, I know irregular versions of almost all the songs I sing so they generally don't fit to other tunes and the earworms aren't transferable. I should probably just sing something else until tPB retreats but I'm too tired and don't care enough.

Date: 2015-10-28 06:01 pm (UTC)I haven't actually looked into any kind of protein powder because I have leftover wariness of soy and dairy from the years when my daughter was allergic to both.

Date: 2015-10-28 06:38 pm (UTC)I've settled on "Now Sports" brand, which comes in an unflavored variety.
It has the texture of fine flour (I've seen some people mention that they use it in pancake recipes instead of flour), and while it doesn't clump, it doesn't really dissolve, either. So its promises of "You won't even notice I'm here!" are disappointing, but that may be why I find it more palatable in soup than in "shakes" -- my brain can easily accommodate split peas in vegetable soup.
A 33 gram portion has between 24 and 28 grams protein and one gram carbs. My healthcare-provider person tells me that the human stomach can only digest 30 grams of protein at a time, and if you try to eat more than that in a single meal, you end up losing protein. So measuring a scoop out for each meal helps make sure I don't get too much, too.
Hope this helps. :-)
(And yeah, my H-C-P person is pretty scornful of whey and soy as not very effective)

Date: 2015-10-28 06:47 pm (UTC)I googled split pea protein powder after I saw your post, but most of what I found was people trying to sell me stuff. The first brand I looked at would not work for me because it has artificial sweeteners that do nasty things to me, but then I looked at the Now Sports brand which doesn't have any of that. I can see why flavoring would be appealing, but...
I'm sorry to hear that it doesn't fully dissolve. I could see that making it challenging to use. I wonder if it would work with applesauce or mashed potatoes or something like that. I have texture issues with things that are too thick to be liquids and too thin to be solids. I can usually handle applesauce if I'm careful.
I think I'm definitely going to see about getting some. Thank you!

Date: 2015-10-28 07:16 pm (UTC)It would probably work in mashed potatoes; for last night's dinner, I blended it with (nuked) carrots, bell pepper and onion strips, thinned with a bit of water, with a dash of apple cider vinegar, olive oil, ginger, garlic and black pepper. Then I poured that over a couple of small potatoes, and reheated it for a couple of minutes. The texture of the result was something a bit like a thin hummus -- it probably would have been even more hummus like if I'd put in more oil and less water...
(I know what you mean about texture).

Bwa ha ha! Oh, dear. It would have served her right if you had...

Of course, I'm not sure, at ten years old, I had a growl voice, yet.

Date: 2015-10-29 02:02 am (UTC)I read a bit about sports nutrition the other day and it sounds like endurance athletes (like me, making deliveries on a bicycle for hours each day) are the ones who can most afford to ignore paleo/high-protein dietary advice (or be vegetarians?) since sustained effort needs the carbs. However, having tired aching muscles after exercise that my body is accustomed to (not new muscles growing from a new activity) means I need more protein to help the muscles repair.
I bought a bag of soy protein powder on clearance because it was a lot cheaper than the alternatives. I figured if it didn't work out, I'd waste less money, and if it did, I could try something different next time. So far it has worked well in porridge and indifferently in a peanut sauce; I have texture issues with thick liquids*, so banana smoothies are probably out. The powder tends to have a slight gritty texture if I use too much of it so I need to work out the best proportions.
*Nice to know I'm not the only one :)

Date: 2015-10-29 10:27 am (UTC)Indeed. And that it's sold as a food supplement, rather than a food.
Even though there may be legal reasons for that, I can't think of a logical reason. Seems perfect for vegans, for example.

Date: 2015-10-29 10:17 am (UTC)Nope. I think it's fairly common, actually. I'm better with "iffy" textures, if the flavor is strong (and pleasant) enough -- hence, all the garlic, ginger, pepper and mustard I use. I think "hot" flavors like these are actually interpreted as textures by the brain, so that may be why "heat" prevents my gag reflex. But an "iffy" texture with bland flavors will just not go down...
And eggs are right out unless they're baked into a custard, or something.
I'm going to try the powder with potatoes and olive oil this afternoon, for lunch, so I can report back... I have a hunch that the oil will 'cover up' the slight grittiness better than water... butter might be even better.
