As I'm growing older, the issue of Disability Rights has been of deepening importance to me.

Ever since I attended the local "celebration" of the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 2010, only to find disappointment that the celebration was confined to the basement and grounds of the regional Independent Living Center, instead of out in the public, I've wanted a Disability Pride Flag.

After the massacre at the Tsukui Yamayuri En care home in Sagamihara, Japan, six years later, when nineteen disabled inmates were murdered and twenty-six injured (because they were disabled, by the killer's own confession), I was driven to design an actual flag, instead of just wishing we had one.

This is the design I've come up with, and this morning (4 June, 2019) I have officially waived all copyright claims to this flag, and registered it under International Public Domain (right click to copy or save -- same with the how-to images).

Here's the version for more comfortable use on backlit screens:

Update! Important! (13 October, 2021)

Early in July, 2021 it came to my attention that, even with desaturated colors, The zigzag design can, when viewed online (especially while scrolling), create a strobe effect, and pose a risk for people with epilepsy, and migraine sufferers.

Therefore, several people in the Disability community on Tumblr, collaborated and came to a consensus on a new design, shown below:

A charcoal grey Disability Pride Flag with a straight diagonal, central, motif

[Image description: a “Straight Diagonal” version of the Disability Pride Flag: A charcoal grey flag with a diagonal band from the top left to bottom right corner, made up of five parallel stripes in red, gold, pale grey, blue, and green Description ends]

Visually Safe Disability Pride Flag by Ann Magill is marked with CC0 1.0

Along with simplifying the central motif to straight lines, the colors have been rearranged so that the warm colors (red and gold) and cool colors (blue and green) are grouped together. And the brightness of the colors have also been edited so that they radiate more evenly from brightest at the center toward darker in the outside stripes.

Although the earlier version of the flag, with the zigzag motif, still exists, and is still in the public domain (and is therefore free for anyone to use and/or adapt), I believe it is better for communication and awareness that we focus on one version of the flag. I have therefore removed the earlier zigzag design from my image gallery.

Thank you for understanding.

Excellent! There's a wee pasto in the first sentence of the description--the "a" is extra.

Wonderful! Thank you for giving this to the community at large.

I feel like the version with the purple rounds out the spectrum better, but the white stripe is clearer and more... flagly.

If I get the spoons together to make a fabric version, I'll put the instructions up.

Tip jar?

Thank you so much for making this flag and freeing it. It was so very needed and is a masterpiece to boot. As a flag geek I have no hesitation saying this is one of my favorite flags. When describing it to other people I tend to start with "Bad ass."

I would love to send you a monetary tribute for this great contribution, but I couldn't find any transfer services (Venmo, PayPal, etc.) listed for in a quick search.

Hi, does anyone know if there is a blank template of the Disability Flag to use as a coloring page? I am searching and haven't found one. We are organizing a grassroots Disability Visibility walk next weekend in S. Florida. Thank you everyone! - Stephanie

Hello Ann!

I would love to help promote the updated version of the flag through our library's social media platforms when it is finalized. If you have a mailing list for notifications, would you please add me to the list?

Thoughts on the black background

Hi Anne, I'm a differently-able artist/designer in the UK and also have a 16 yr old daughter with Downs Syndrome. I've spent the last 20 years setting up social enterprises that give training to differently-able people in the developing world, to enable them to become highly skilled artisans and support themselves with dignity through the work of their hands, rather than street begging. I love your flag but would really appreciate the opportunity to have a deep blue background to represent the infinite possibilities within disabled people, as personally that's something I feel would represent me as a disabled person and all those I've lived alongside and worked with over the last 20 years. I would leave the black lines in between the zig-zags, to represent the symbolism you've mentioned is attached to that, so it's still very much included. I have created this version but not used it yet. Out of respect to a fellow artist I wanted to let you know about my desire to do so and would love to know what you think. Very best wishes to you from the UK :) Susie

HI, thanks so much for your swift reply, it's really kind of you! Great to hear from you, and thanks v much for all the useful information.

Just a brief reply for not (apologies) as about to have a meeting with our artisans in Ecuador, via the wonders of zoom.

If you have 5 minutes, here's a video of them and how our organisation works with them.

Flag Image Links don’t work

Hello Ann,

Thank you for updating the design to be more accessible. We love it. The links for the low contrast flag colours don’t work. Could you kindly update the link or file attached whenever you can. Thanks so much.

Neurodivergence too?

Hello

I am wondering if this flag includes neurodivergence? I would like to share the flag for myself and others as a symbol show solidarity with disabled and neurodivegent children in schools with special educational needs who are currently being discriminated against. The threat of prosecution and persecution is rising but there are many hopeful voices rising too and finding new ways. I have seen a version with purple in it but not sure if this is yours? My son and I are both autistic.

Many thanks
Susan

Link for Updated Flag

Hi Ann,

I love the new flag design! I work for a disability support organization and we'd love to share the image of the updated flag but I cannot seem to get the link provided to work. Is there another place we can source this image? Thank you so much for this important work and for sharing it with everyone so freely.

Greetings, I cannot download a larger PNG or other version of the "flag" rectangular graphic. The link is not working. At this time, the only option is to right-click on the graphic embedded within this page, however that is a small version of the rectangle. We would like a larger number of pixels, as then we can use it and it will look great behind us as a background in web-based meetings, and other purposes. Thanks so much for your attention to this matter. By the way, nice design.

Wikipedia still shows the old flag

Thanks so much for the new flag!
Just wanted to mention that while I see the new flag appears in Wikipedia under this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disability_Pride_Month#/media/File:Visually_Safe_Disability_Pride_Flag.png (Created July 28, 2021)
The old flag still appears in Wikipedia under this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Disability_Pride_Flag_Ann_Magill_copyrights_waived.svg
and under "File History" it says "Current 09:54, 4 July 2021" thus giving the impression that the flag is still current.
May I suggest adding a comment or link to the outdated link that points people to the new one?
Thanks again.
