Heard from a commentator on a broadcast of a golf game, all within the space of a few minutes:

On the fact that the most skilled and conscientious player is having a bad day:

"Makes me want to suck a lemon!"

To a golf ball that was rolling straight for the hole, for par, then skirted the edge and rolled away at the last second:

"Ugh! Get away from me!

On the day's game in general:

"They call it 'golf.' ... I don't know why."

Why yes. I am easily amused. How did you guess?

That's all lovely:) I love 'ugh, get away from me!' That's my favourite kind of commentary, and easily amused is the best way to be, it's happy making. Yay.

When he said: "Get away from me!" (to the ball, no less. I love people who talk to things), I thought immediately: "That's an LJ icon caption if ever I heard one!"

And the last comment did make me wonder: "Why did they name it 'golf'?" It is a very silly-sounding word.

But the first comment... I dunno. But when I'm having a frustrating day, I want chocolate... unless he gets the hiccoughs when he's frustrated; sucking a lemon is a good cure for that...

And yes. People who are difficult to amuse are just trying to be unpleasant, imnsho.

Most dictionaries decline to speculate about where the word "golf" comes from. I've seen it claimed that it comes from a Germanic word meaning "club". I've also seen it claimed that it comes from a Scandinavian word meaning "hole things are stored in". Tolkien, of course, asserted that it came from the name of an ancient King whose head was struck by a club-wielding opponent with such force that it flew off and landed in a rabbit-hole...

I think the lemon thing is about counter-irritation: "I'm going to go suck a lemon for a while, then maybe this won't seem so bad by comparison."
