Can't think of a question, today, so I am posting videos of songs that I think of, when New Year's comes around -- in chronological order. Some of these videos are YouTube Old, and low rez. And I don't think any of them have captions. But I'll link to lyrics where I find them.

The Old Year Now Away is Fled (1542)

This duet is only singing the first two verses. But the full song can be found here: Carol for New Year's Day

A sung recitation of Alfred Lord Tennyson's "Ring out, Wild Bells" (1833)

Found here at the Poetry Foundation: In Memoriam A. H. H. Obiit MDCCCXXXIII

"When you're Traveling" -- Animaniacs (1996)

Lyrics are here at the Animaniacs fandom Wiki

Day Five: If you could invent a holiday ...?

Day Four: Our Pride and Joys

Day Three: My attempt at Party Games for this medium

Day Two: Snacks and treats

Day One: Favorite Things

So: Here's a thing to celebrate and talk about today: What is something you learned in 2018?

You don't have to answer these questions, exactly... You can treat them as prompts:

1) What did you learn about yourself (that you are willing to share)?

2) What new thing (to you) did you learn about the world?

So, we're all gathered here to celebrate the New Year (more or less). And what is a year besides a collection of holidays, and other observances, with long stretches in between?

Most holidays have their roots in Long Ago. But some are modern. There's "Star Wars Day" (May the Fourth), and International Talk Like a Pirate Day (19 September). And this year, the idea for Wolfenoot went viral.

If you could invent a new holiday, or three, what would it be? Or, if you're happy with all the ones currently on your local calendar, which is your favorite?

Two ideas for holidays that I thought up )

Day Four conversation starters:

1) What are you most proud of, from 2018? It doesn't have to be a big accomplishment. It could just be as simple as "I'm still here, dammit!" It also doesn't necessarily have been something you've accomplished. Being proud of other people is also an admirable thing.

2) What's something that made you happy, in 2018?

Sorry today's party post took so long to go up. I was trying to figure out how "parlor-type" games would work when everyone is replying out of sync with each other. I hope the variations I've come up with will work.

What I've decided to do: Start a new comment thread for each game with the name of the game in the title, and the first post having the rules. Then, if you want to play that game, you reply to that post (or to a reply to a reply in that thread). That way, people can see who's responding to what...

I hope that makes sense.

Maybe it would be better if I just started, so you can see what I mean.

The party kicked off here with some ice-breaker questions about favorite things.

You can go back and answer as many questions as you'd like, and maybe ask a few of your own. I hope, by the end of the week, to have a library of recommendations for YouTube Channels and videos, books, and songs. Check it out. You might find some new favorites!

A party also needs snacks and treats. We can't have an actual snack table through the Internet, but we can share recipes.

So: Here are a few more questions:

1. Do you have a sandwich combo that you like, but other people would think is really weird? If so, what is it?

2. How sweet is your tooth? Or do you prefer savory treats?
  • If you prefer sweet, do you prefer things like mints and hard caramels, or do you prefer creamy things, like chocolate, and custards?
  • If you prefer savory, how spicy do you like things? How salty? Do you like popcorn? What's your favorite topping?

3) Have you ever "invented" a recipe that turned out really well, in your estimation? Would it be simple for someone low on (metaphorical) spoons to do? Care to share?

To kick things off, here are some ice-breaker questions. Since my intention is to focus on The Happy, they're all questions about favorites. Since this party will last seven days, there are seven questions:

  1. What is your favorite holiday--any holiday--memory? It could be the holidays people usually mean when they say: "Happy Holidays!" or it could be Halloween, or Arbor Day, or Star Wars Day, or Thursday the 20th, or your best friend's birthday, or... whatever.

  2. What's your favorite treat to eat when you're in a celebratory mood?

  3. What's your favorite holiday song? (And yes, my definition of "holiday" covers anything you want it to)

  4. Do you have a favorite YouTube channel? If so, what is it?

  5. What was your favorite piece of media from 2018? (It could have been produced this year, or any year. It could have been mass-produced and sold to the public, or it could have been a bit of privately made ephemera, like a doodle in the margin of a page, whatever.... Just something you've seen this year that you really, really like)

  6. What's your favorite cryptid?

  7. What's your favorite meme?

And you're all invited.

On Friday, I made a post on my Tumblr blog, announcing that there's a new Community on Dreamwidth for Tumblr refugees to find each other: [community profile] the_great_tumblr_purge, and it's been the most popular post on my blog there in months.

So I thought, since I invited people to join Dreamwidth, I should also do something with/for them, and give them a chance practicing actually using the platform. ... Especially since there's a specific discussion thread on Tumblr, about why Christmas is less popular than Halloween in that community (summary: Tumblr skews toward young and marginalized people, and enforced time with birth families over friends is fraught).

And so I further figured that refugees from Tumblr will want a place to escape to, even if it's a virtual place, and even if it's just for a few minutes. So:

From Noon, Eastern Standard Time, December 25, 2018 (9:00 AM Pacific Standard Time, 5:00 PM Greenwich Mean Time), to Noon (9 AM/5 PM) January 1, 2019, I'll be allowing anonymous comments, and posting here more than on Tumblr. And my topics will be "Favorite Things & Fun Things," because it's a Party, after all.

I will tag these posts "Year-Out Party 2018" in case you want to filter them out of your reading pages to avoid spam. ...I'm also inviting Dreamwidth old-timers to come in and help welcome the newbies, of course. ...But just in case.

(Oh, and yesterday, I finally made a sticky introduction to this journal, outlining the aspects of who I am that influences what I write here, the kinds of things you can expect from me, and what I consider "good manners" [What I expect from my readers and chatters]. I'd really appreciate it if people who know me fairly well would check it out, and tell me if I'm presenting myself accurately. Thanks!)
